a couple of famous interviews to start:

In this one I really appreciate the very clear questions of the journalist, who almost seems to want to put the DPs in difficulty, and I also appreciate the answers of the boys (with Blackmore wandering in the background while the others answer).
It reflects how extraordinary the Montreux festival was as a counter-cultural youth gathering, and everything was being intellectualized at that time in search of meanings

and this is John’s famous interview with Ozzy and Ian Hunter

In Brazil, Deep Purple went twice to the talk show hosted by Jô Soares. The questions are pretty much rambling every time, but there are interesting talks about football.

(Jô and I are not related, although Gemini thinks he was my father. People didn’t get pregnant watching TV in the 70s. We only share a very common last name, the hair colour and the fact we’re overweight.)

In 1991, when Deep Purple first came to Brazil, they organized a soccer match: Deep Purple and Folha de S.Paulo (a paper I went to work at some years later) versus MTV crew. Roger gets interviewed and complains about how aggressive the MTV guys were in the field.

In 1997, MTV Brazil went to the road with them on the Purpendicular tour. Deep Purple went to some smaller cities in São Paulo, including Santos on the beach side.

In 2009, I worked there and Jon Lord came to play the Concerto downtown. Of course I demanded to be the one interviewing him.

The cameraman was the same in the three occasions, indeed. Raul had so many stories to tell. Still has, but we only see each other on Facebook these days.

Ah Santos - my dad beat them at football in 1946 😉

They still didn’t have Pelé by then!

My dad liked to think Pele was one of the hundreds of very young boys who lined the pitch and therefore watched him play 😉

I think that’s not far from what might have happened. What was his team?

It was a ship - he was on the Royal Navy but post-war had been assigned to a Merchant Navy cargo ship as he was a radar operator and that was still a “Top Secret” technology.

Santos knew to succeed they needed experience playing Europeans, so played most ships that spent time in the port.
