An update: since reading many a glowing opinion about the record, I think the two things that rubbed me the wrong way are:

  1. People talking about it like it’s “like the 1970’s” or “best since Machine Head” (or whatever album decades ago), which, to my ears at least, it is neither.

Splat! has nothing to do with the Seventies, as has nothing Deep Purple has done since the reunion (which is exactly why I have such a high opinion of their new music in general - unlike practically with every other band in that age bracket, the songs are still not worse rewrites of old hits, just with modern production and worse execution) .

Also you can’t seriously say that an album by Deep Purple in the 2020’s is way better than, say, Burn or Perfect Strangers (or, in my view, any of the three first Morse albums, but that is more a matter of taste).

  1. Arrogant Boy got me off the wrong foot. I do like the speed and dexterity, but I can’t help thinking about the lyrical content that sounds like a cross between a nursery rhyme and what Nigel Farage would say. I know it can be interpreted differently, but combined with some carefully worded subtle hints from before, I can’t unhear it. For someone who stood against war and, while never overtly political, good things in general (look at how clearly they took a stand for Ukraine), this is like heading in to the “too old uncle” terri-Tory. Please correct me if I’m overreacting!

Of course it sounds like nothing like 70s era Purple. Just PR talk.
