Let’s sort this one out! White I expect certain albums to surface at the top and bottom, there will probably be those that end up at both ends, and some will remain squarely in the middle… anyway, here’s my nowadays trendy tier list. If you are not familiar with the concept, S equals a superior album, A is an excellent one, B is a good record and C is an average, D below-average with redeeming qualities and F just not worth the time. I have tried to use an even distribution and these are ranked in relation to each other - in terms of music in general, even on a bad day, Deep Purple are above average.
S - Machine Head, In Rock, Burn
A - Fireball, Perfect Strangers
B - Shades Of Deep Purple, Come Taste The Band, Bananas, Abandon, Purpendicular, The House of Blue Light
C - Stormbringer, Who Do We Think We Are, Rapture of the Deep, Now What ?!, Infinite, Deep Purple, Book of Taliesyn
D - The Battle Rages On, Slaves and Masters, Splat, Whoosh, =1
F - Turning to Crime
It is telling that if I should pick my top 25 or something Purple tracks, several of them would be from albums on the lower end of the scale - they are just not as good taken as a whole.
Of the albums, I am willing to still give Splat the benefit of doubt, and I might or not move it up a notch in the coming years. In general I don’t really see myself listening to their 2020’s albums over and over if given the choice of picking anything from the discography. And I must say I enjoy listening to S&M and even TBRO, even if I recognize they feel “forced”.
Anyway, waiting for counterarguments and all the silliness involved in arguing matters of taste, show your lists!
