IP's playing on Arrogant Boy

Something’s wrong when his own recording of his drumming on Arrogant Boy has a better sound than what ended up on the album. What happened there?

My guess: EDS*.

Indeed the drums do sound much better with these Ian Paice ‘solo’ performances Daniel. They are ‘sitting’ out from the overall mix though, unlike the recordings which are buried within. It seems to be the way of things these days with music, especially rock music. The drums are drowned out, muffled and have no ‘hit’ if you know what I am saying, no clarity and punch. Uwe can breathe a huge sigh of relief that it isn’t just Bob, although we have been aware of that before in many aspects. Today’s technology and ‘way’ of doing things leaves a lot to be desired. The so called ‘cinematic’ effect or experience has Bob treading on thin ice at times though, he he he, he doesn’t get out THAT easily let me tell you. As I have often stated over the years, the distorted riffing loud electric guitar also drowns out other instruments. Listen to some of older Sabbath and Iommi’s guitar kills everything else in the mix at times. Sabotage is a prime example. Too loud the guitar solos, the album Born Again is a culprit there too. In that aspect it was also occurring back in the glory days at times. Not to worry, I had better get out of here while I still can, he he he. The ‘sentinel’ Uwe will be watching and waiting. Cheers.

Could it be that the drums were triggered which would explain why IP sounds absolutely great in his own clip and like a drum machine on the finished product?

Must be frustrating for IP, who clearly put a lot of effort into his performance.

I have yet to hear any dissatisfaction voiced by Little Ian about how Bob makes him sound.

IMHO, the drum sound all you guys long for - clean and hifi’sh as in a drum clinic - died its death with Nirvana. That was a while ago. One of the few genres where it lasted a bit longer was AOR/Melodic Rock. I don’t see it coming back anytime soon.

No need to bring Nirvana into a discussion about an isolated IP track from 2026.

IP’s own recording features a room sound of the drums (absent from DP albums since I don’t know when) and it also clearly is audible proof that IP not only still has it but nails the take, handling the fills effortlessly, the way we’ve become accustomed to seeing him over the years.

Switch to the record and the fills sound as if they’re played by a drummer struggling to keep up, hence the drum machine association.

I am curious what it is they’ve added (triggers?) that works to IP’s detriment in such a bad way.

Honestly,
even when I listen to “Splat” through my phone’s speaker, I can hear Paicey’s great performance, but clearly, we have different ears!

For lack of a better word, the fills on the album version of AB sound ”clipped”. No such thing in IP’s recording.

Those are two different mixes. The video is a rough mono mix, with all the instruments bunched together into one knot. On the album guitar, keyboards, and bass are more prominent in the foreground, with drums mixed more to the background. Both sound fine for what it is.

Everything louder than everything else!

Those are obvious differences. I am talking of the sound of the drums themselves.

Daniel can be persistent, do not provoke him!

Ian Paice talking about the Apres Vous track monitor mix that he is playing along to. No editing, cut and paste etc. The 'click track ’ is mentioned as it is in this second article I have come across. the Infinite recordings and Ian’s take on click tracking etc. Cheers

Ian also demonstrating the Roland -V-Drums. Interesting indeed.

Here is that older interview with Ian Paice and his lamenting of today’s studio technology and also drummers and people’s shifting to the normalisation of what today’s recordings are delivering. Something like that. Go Ian, there are still a few music fans that know exactly what you are on about. Hooray!
