I’d love to see you telling Ian Gillan face to face that The Beatles are one of the most overrated bands… The look on his face then would surely be priceless. I can even hear him assurring you that you musn’t worry, after all Beatles place in shaping the landscape of British music is set in stone forever, while some of their overrated commentators will go one day and that will be it for them.
And don’t worry, I never understood fully all the fuss about them either. Took me decades to grow to it, not to share it, but see it in a wider context, when I saw that they impacted directly most, if not all the musicians we love and rave about.

The Beatles are one of the most overrated bands, because
a) there is an endless influx of people in every generation who rate everything the Fab Four have ever done, as a group or as solo artists, as a “10/10 beyond comparison”, and
b) the fact that Pete Best became a multimillionaire when his contributions to the band were finally recognized with actual royalties, and
c) countless people say with a straight face they “invented heavy metal” with Helter Skelter (which, yes, is a very good and heavy song, but just a small piece in the origin story)
So, it’s not so much that they don’t deserve to be overrated, it’s just that they are. I too, am interested in whatever “new” there is to be had, the last time it was the “last song ever” and that was actually pretty good as well.
Martin I would love to tell him anything to his face 
I find them overrated because even though I do know what they did and know about their importance, they did not use their potential as far as I can see.
Yeah, they made some nice pop music, but they ended way too soon, in ‘70, at a period where they really could have made a difference!
I’m happy Purple happened! And I guess most agree that Purple have made the very best for themselves

You know of course about the Jeff Lynne influence and producing (over producing I might add) re ‘Free as a bird’!
When that was announced I was excited and in awe of what they could have made together, but oh boy I was disappointed when I heard the result 
And I promised myself never to be expecting anything anymore…

My dear late mom would be closer to that invention than Beatles ever were, and - and this I am sorry to say - she preferred music like this (I really do apologise to all of you

What a conglomerate of clueless toss this thread already is. John Lennon and George Harrison may forgive you, I can’t.
And Karin: As a card-carrying Oasis fan stating that The Beatles are overrated is a bit like a dog-owner (the dreaded Anton rears his snout again!) saying that (s)he dislikes the biological concept of a wolf. 
You should feed Anton cat food from now on and teach him to retract his claws as well as purr.

And the guy who said this while in a slump and being somewhat cross wasn’t even as big as The Beatles were.

I love Beatles..
Given the times and the surviving members, I’ve always dreamed of Ringo and Paul—on bass and drums—taking up permanent spots in the Rolling Stones… It would be amazing, but they’d better hurry up! Damn it! Cazzo!

For the record, I thoroughly enjoy practically all of the Beatles’ music and several of their solo works (the most obvious being Imagine and All Things Must Pass). The 8-hour documentary film Get Back also made me understand just how good a drummer Ringo Starr was at that point. They were a great band that had four extremely talented musicians, and they were at the right place at the right time, and for a considerable number of years, they made the most of everything thrown their way.
Perhaps the most telling part of this is that I listened to George Harrison’s Electronic Sound through, and as far as I understand, quite a few people have done the same - I just learned it even charted in the US at the time of release, and that was definitely not based on the audio recording.

First and foremost: what John meant was that PEOPLE, their fans, thought JC to be of lesser importance than Beatles.
He was hated beyond belief for that statement. But he actually did not mean he himself was of greater importance.
Anton says, and I quote: “behave you dear German gentleman who is the main cause my mommy is playing with this wooden stick every single day without getting any better and I am not allowed to borrow it…”
We are never going to agree on this subject, and that is ok, because I know I’m right 
Uwe come on! You cannot deny that Beatles didn’t use their potential to the fullest! You simply cannot!
In other words: do you REALLY think Beatles were all they could be?

Now I could draw some comparison to this American female singer you adore so much, but I won’t, because then I’ll use words and so much space that our dear admin will be forced to invent a completely new forum!
I like a lot of their songs, of course I do, but as I grow older and older I can see how little they actually did, compared to all the other bands that happened at that time.
A little development has never harmed anyone as far as I know.
Take a look at our favourite band! They have completed the circle, haven’t they?
Started out with In Rock, got a bit heavier, then they developed into some nicely produced soft rock, and darn it if they aren’t now were they started

But accusing one woman (yes Yoko) to be the main reason for a break up is far fetched.
I agree with Uwe dear Karin:
saying that the Beatles are overrated while appreciating those inferior clones that are Oasis is pure recklessness!
It’s like saying Deep Purple are overrated while worshipping The Darkness.
or say Led Zeppelin are overrated by worshipping Greta Van Fleet clones.
not to mention that musically the Beatles were anything but banal in writing songs, they were the first to harmonically introduce, in pop songs of worldwide reach, the “second/sixth Neapolitan” and the diabolus in musica.

I really ought to be sleeping by now, but I have to say this:
I never said Beatles didn’t make good tunes!
I just said, in all honesty and with a little tear in my eye corner: they didn’t use that potential they had!
The Darkness 
Well, I like Oasis, a lot! But I’ve never claimed them to be better or more enthusiastic than Purple
But yes, I am fond of their cheekiness, their expressions, the way they seem to think they are the best thing ever happening to the music industry! That kind of attitude always impresses me
When I call Beatles overrated it is because their potential, their musicality were ruined by them bickering about - yeah about what really!
And now we’ll never know what could have been…
But to compare Purple with Beatles is almost like comparing a big fat salmon with a little oversalted herring (which we, btw, eat raw in Denmark… descendants of the brave and bloodthirsty Vikings and all!)
And Flávio, I have never said LZ were overrated either

In less than a decade of their existence, The Beatles changed music, fashion, youth culture and even a little bit of the world.
Deep Purple were and are a very good rock band with almost zero cultural influence and relevance in the last 50+ years or so.
Let’s not get carried away, my Danish multicolor flower, shall we?

And the way Purple have been an influence and inspiration is beyond measurement in my world 
Just walk into any store, or market, and start humming the first notes to Smoke on the Water, EVERYONE will immediately be able to take the next notes! Believe me, I do it all the time when I’m waiting in line at the supermarket
