Obviously we have different vocabularies, but so as not to seem too harsh, I’ll give you this gift:
A very good studio band The Beatles. however as we never had the pleasure of them touring in their more important era, well enough said there. Cheers.
The Wings didn’t sound too shabby live, did they?
Amazing! Unbelievable!
I seem to be misunderstood no matter what I say….
Listen dear Gentlemen:
I call the Beatles overrated because:
- they did not use that potential they had
- they were among the first contemporary bands - could have made more, developed into more interesting music. And Uwe, no! Two “rock” songs don’t make them a rock band

- yes they made a lot of nice music, but so did a lot of other bands
- they ended too soon. The 70s were a very happening decade musically speaking. They stopped in ‘70.
Deep Purple had so many internal problems, but they fought their way through:
https://youtu.be/jqsFTPUF_hQ?is=QIBA0OovLJXM3Xtl
Even without Ritchie.
But what do I know how it was to be with the Beatles?
All I know is what they have spilled to us. And I remember George and Ringo complaining about the way John and Paul were absolute rulers.
And yes, I still find Beatles to be overrated, maybe not so much because of the band itself, but what the fans, the audiences, the critics claimed them to be!
Well, today at 14.00 we will know a lot more, but if it goes as usual (here still bickering about ‘Free as a burd’) nothing much is expected. Hopefully I am wrong ![]()
You‘re too young too understand, Karin. I was a child when I first saw The Fab Four on black & white TV, it was the dawning of a new age.
it was the dawning of a new age.
The Beatles were significant.
They demonstrated that a group could write its own songs, paving the way for all future artists;
they changed pop and rock music forever, invented the concept of global success, and transformed the art of songwriting. They revolutionized the recording studio and influenced fashion and culture worldwide. Their style evolved within just a few years from simple love songs to complex, experimental masterpieces. They used the recording studio as an additional instrument, inventing new sounds and effects. They were the first to create a truly global music market, with devoted fans in every nation. Through their hairstyles, clothing, and ideas, they drove the social changes of the 1960s and shaped fashion and cultural trends. They embodied a united band in which every member played a key role—without a single boss, a designated leader, or a band named after a frontman.
Thank you from the bottom of my little black heart to call me too young at any point in time!
Listen now:
I AM CALLING THEM OVERRATED BECAUSE THEY DID NOT USE THAT POTENTIAL THEY HAD!
Sorry I yelled ![]()
The amount of potential The Beatles used might not have yet scraped the barrel, but was more than any other band’s - either contemporary or since their demise. And their unused potential would have been enough to feed ten other bands.
Karin, you have a habit of belittling everything - Elvis or The Beatles - that was before your generation. That is of course the privilege of a young girl, but one day you will be a mature woman and maybe see things differently in perspective. Until then you can celebrate Oasis who wouldn‘t even exist without The Beatles.
Uwe, I am not the only one in the whole world who thinks of Beatles like that! Even in here some persons have said the same.
No, I’m not belittling the bands and singers before my time, f.i I love Beethoven and Tchaikovsky very much. And of course also a lot of bands making temporary music
Kinks, the Move, Episode Six comes to mind
oh and I adore Frank Sinatra ![]()
The problems I have with the BT is of a personal kind.
I do believe Beatles are overrated, because they didn’t fulfill their potential, but the real overrating happens when their fans think EVERYTHING they have done is a masterpiece!
When ‘Free as a bird’ was released I heard grown men were in awe, they were overjoyed, not because the tune was extraordinarily good but because it was Beatles.
But Uwe, how come we always end up discussing our different tastes?
It’s just like discussing what colour is the prettiest!
Mine is
- I love this colour, I feel so good when I’m surrounding by blue colours.
But that does not mean that I don’t accept other people’s favourite colours.
And you can never tell me that your favourite colour is better or prettier than mine ![]()
“That is of course the privilege of a young girl, but one day you will be a mature woman and maybe see things differently in perspective.”
I have been called a mature lady, last year I believe it was!
I know of course you’re applying I’m not in full possession of my faculties! And you might be right there, but even stupid people are allowed to have our own opinion ![]()

I always really liked the Wings band, excellent musicians and some really high quality songs from McCartney. He is a superb all round musician. I do tend to lean toward him most of the time, especially live in concert. Although Lennon has so many wonderful songs too but his live performances that I have witnessed have too much boring blues and old rock 'n roll in them for me. George composed some nice songs at times, but not as prolific as the other two main guys. Great concert footage that Uwe, I have since found the entire concert online. Cheers.
Karin, I’m not a fan of the barrel scrapings of The Beatles that have been released over the decades either - when Macca took a dump it still stank, vegetarian or not.
But the new Macca solo album for instance is a lovely piece of work.
And my what a bass player he was, a bit of a Mozart on four strings.
Oh Uwe you’re right about Paul’s solo albums! He was and is really good ![]()
Have you seen the “splendid news””
A new production of ‘Rubber soul’ - a bit disappointed I have to say!
Overrated…? I thought you meant Led Zep ![]()

I’ve ordered the new mix of Rubber Soul already.
One cannot always give credence to what the Woman of the North says and writes —> GILLAN were really famous in Denmark in the 80s.
The Beatles are ‘over rated’ by the media and many music followers, for different reasons. However, many don’t seem to remember how the ‘Wall of Sound’ from Phil Spector and his cohorts in the USA influenced so many artists in the studio and with arrangements regarding songwriting and composition etc. Including Brain Wilson and also Andrew Oldham in the British scene. The Beatles were influenced by many, but some people don’t seem to include that in their career, history etc. Insinuating that The Beatles were almost everything and without them music would have never travelled down the road that it did. Hypothetical hogwash that is. How can these people assume such fantasy? Anyway, many of the British acts were influenced by musicians in the USA, before The Beatles. The artists and their music also influence heavily what followed in the 1970’s. So yes, I have always though from the early to mid 70’s, when I became much more aware of what was going on and had gone before, that The Beatles are ‘rewarded’ with far too much of the, “oh can you imagine how boring music would have been without the Beatles” hype. They had many influences. What about the people that influenced them, can we imagine what The Beatles would have sounded like without their influences. Just a thought or three, trying to exclude all the media sensationalist hype. Good on you Karin for mentioning what constantly needs to be said. Cheers.
Listen, do you wanna know a secret…. Let me whisper in your ear:
I have ordered it too ![]()
I’ve never said I don’t like Beatles!
Some people tend to overanalyse when I ramble.
And YES Gillan (the band) was quite popular in Denmark, at least were I lived ![]()
Do you know what I would have loved? If Gillan and Purple have been as worshipped as Beatles always were ![]()
Whenever Beatles made anything, they were worshipped just because it was them making it.
Every time Purple have made a new record, at least in Denmark, they are assessed like it was their first ever made album. Some people seem very surprised: “oh the old dudes can still rock… oh Gillan can still sing… oh their new Hammond organist can still play” etc
But when Paul McCartney makes a new album (or Rolling Stones for that matter) people automatically believe it is pure gold! No matter what.
And in my humble opinion there is much more value in even the least talented album from Purple (should there be any) than there is in all other bands.
Uwe, had you also expected an old recording had been dusted off and came to life again, with a new producer?
I had hoped that.
Thank you MacGregor ![]()
You know what? I’ll drink a special cup of coffee in your honour ![]()
No no, no no - not with whiskey
just a new blend I’ve tried and bought. I tell you, it is yummy.
And you mention something I have thought always:
If Beatles could have happened, other bands could have too, especially Purple.
Yes, Beatles were influenced by the music they listened to.
It was not like an angel from above materialised in front of Paul and John and told them what to do. They listened to the music that formed them, just like Purple and every other band did.
And talent as we have seen in all Purple (and the branches) can not be held down.
I dare to say that had Beatles never happened Purple would still have been a very important contribution to the world of music.
Well, enough said already.
Anton and his momma is going for a walk in the beautiful forest we have nearby. Yesterday we saw a fox cub, but I had Anton in a leash, so both were secured. I wonder if Anton could have run it up, but no need to risk anything ![]()
No, I prefer remasters and remixes to barrel scrapings you generally only listen to just once out of historical interest.
Not sure whether I would grant Phil Spector the same or a comparable status to The Beatles and George Martin for the development of rock music, he was very much hit (no punt intended) and miss, the lone gunner.
It’s a myth that following the split, everything from the ex-Beatles was praised to high heaven. For at least a decade nearly all output by John and Paul was met with derision by critics and George and Ringo weren’t taken serious at all. People would snipe all the time at Linda’s vocal and keyboard skills and Yoko had constant bad press too. It was only with the start of the 80s that some reassessment took place as far as the solo recordings went.
“Phil Spector? Oh the man with the weird hair”, as a friend of mine once said ![]()
No, you’re right George and Ringo were always considered to be VERY fortunate to be in the present of the ‘earthly godlike men’ John and Paul.
But I don’t agree with you that every thing, at least what John and Paul made, were criticised.
However I remember when John joined Yoko he was ridiculed big time, or rather she was, because of her singing. But still people, believed that the Fab Four would come together, until that hideous day in December ‘80.
(And then came all the jokes: what does it take to get Beatles together? 3 more bullets - NOT my joke. I hated it)
And Paul with his wife… well I liked the Wings, but I know not everyone did. And looking back, it was a bit genderless. But then came this:
https://youtu.be/NUbz2NEAi80?is=MtqzV8jmMQivfqzj
And I suddenly recognised him as a bold(er) lyricist. And no not because of the sexual undertones, but because he seemed much more free and oh, dare I say happy? I simply love when I can see an eternal smile lurking in the eyes.
And oh man his voice was still very very good! (Is it just me or does PMcC looks a bit like Hugh Grant? Or maybe it’s the other way around?)
But of course this album years later:
https://youtu.be/6ayH91JmW6c?is=-Z25ZE4aKO5zJhDg
I loved this album
also because after Linda died it was his first attempt to be himself again.
(Yes Uwe, I know it’s Ian behind the drums
)
John Lennon made this unforgettable album:

(yes, hopeless romantic!)
Well, back to the harsh reality:
John and Paul could never be what they were when they were together…
George joined Traveling Wilburys, and Ringo, well to be honest I didn’t know what he was doing.
Wait a minute! Did we actually agree on something here??![]()
But as I always do, whenever I listen to too soft music, I need a bit of this:

Ahhh, yes, now I can think and breathe again ![]()
Why I always link to Hotline? Because it is my favourite at that album.
But this is also neat:

I like me some up tempo rock.
But of course his lovesong to Bron was cute too, Keep it warm rat.
I thought Wings were eventually received quite well after a few years, at least from my memory. I suppose Imagine had its followers too, plus a few hits here and there including from George. I don’t know, were they loathed by the critics that much? I do recall the jibes at Linda and her keyboard skills, which of course had me watching her the other night from that link you sent Uwe, the Wings 1976 concert. Of course poor ole Yoko was always going to get hammered by the callous critics and many Beatles fans. The gossip, the innuendo, the jealousy etc etc. Cheers.
