Erik, I like Beatles. But I do find them overrated in the sense that NO MATTER what the four gentlemen have done, it’s AUTOMATICALLY perfect in people’s minds because it was Paul, John, George or Ringo!
But when Purple have been launching new material, they have often been criticised (at least in my little country, Denmark, by Thomas Treo…)
You are right about the socalled holy Fab Four, in my ranking of music there are so many composers, singers, bands that fill me with joy and gratitude for the gift of music…the Beatles are one of them like Purple, Coltrane, Mahler, David Crosby, Tom Waits, Black Sabbath, Bob Dylan and my piano teacher who tries for years now to improve my moderate skills..
I just recently read a Bio of Paul Mccartney, made me relisten my Beatles-collection and there are some incredible harmonies that connected my brain to…Mozart, Beethoven, even Bach…

No, it’s not. Purple are first and foremost a band that shine through their instrumental expertise and execution. They are not the world’s greatest songwriters, I’ve come to realize that over the decades. They’re not by any means bad and the heavy rock genre is not really a songwriters’ artisan shop in any case, but saying DP songs are better than The Beatles’ top songs in an accepted songwriting craft sense is stretching it. You look at how many Beatles songs have been successfully covered and then look for the same with DP. Most DP songs are harmonically/chords-wise meat and potatoes and their melodies are far less intricate than The Beatles‘ ones. It’s like saying John Lee Hooker wrote more elaborate music than Brian Wilson or Duke Ellington.
That said, I love Strangeways and it is a strong DP number. But strip the instrumentation and solos away, then what is left to play on a solitary acoustic guitar around a camp fire?

A Purple fan saying DP is superior to The Beatles is a bit like a Fab Four fan arguing that George Harrison is the superior guitarist to Ritchie Blackmore. You meet someone like that at a party and ask yourself: Is (s)he really serious about this?
What’s next, that Johnny Depp is a better guitarist than Jeff Beck, but that Jeff is the better actor?
What you are always free to say is that you may like one better over the other. If riff oriented music with classical flourishes and snazzy solos is your thing, then of course DP are gonna win out, but that doesn’t make them better songwriters. And if riffs aren’t your thing, but interesting chord progressions, developed harmony vocals and lavish arrangements are, then you are gonna yawn at DP and comment: It’s all a bit repetetive, isn’t it? Riff, more riff, and yet more riff, long aimless solos documenting how well everyone can play, and apparently no one got paid to think up a proper chorus.
People prefer certain musical artists over others. Regarding the ‘Fab Four’, I have to admit to listening to other bands like DP, Sabbath,Floyd etc, and all the other bands that I admire more than The Beatles. It isn’ that I don’t really enjoy many of their wonderful compositions. Maybe it is that I have heard them to death, many of them, thankfully not all of them. Thankfully there are so many great songs that are not as popular to the masses, commercially speaking. I naturally gravitated to my favourite artists much more and still do most of the time. It happens, it isn’t a premeditated thought at all, it is just what we like to listen to more, most of the time. Cheers.
