One of the most overrated bands…

I have never heard of that possible ‘collaboration’ before Karin. However I do live under a rock, so that could have passed me by at some time. Cheers.

Oh ok, I just thought I somehow remembered

I don’t know, but he was surely involved with Glenn Hughes in the past, though for other things…

Bowie looks a bit like Sean Bean, the actor, in that vid!!! I loved the way he would always flirt with his bassist Gail Ann Dorsey at gigs. Not that Gail is susceptible to male flirting in any deeper way.

Nope, not aware of David and Famous-in- Denmark-and-other-Territories-Ian ever doing something together musically. Bowie only collaborated rarely with other singers, Marc Bolan, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger were exceptions from the rule and all four suitably superstar, Bowie did have a penchant for liking to mix with “the right people” only. Others wouldn’t catch his interest.

Re Bowie and Glenn, I still bemoan the missed opportunity of Glenn lending his bass and backing vocals skills to Bowie’s magnificent Station to Station. Bu the time that was recorded in the fall of 1975 at the Record Plant in LA, Ritchie’s previous statement to Glenn that playing with Bowie was verboten because it might confuse the fans (what a load of simpleton rubbish!) was no longer relevant due to the Man in Black turning all colorful (not) over the Rainbow, but Glenn was busy rehearsing and recording CTTB with new boy Tommy (Bowie was the one to drop Glenn off with his car for the first audition with Tommy). But I hold to this day that Glenn’s bass playing and his vocals would have slotted in nicely with one of Bowie’s greatest works:

I can easily envisage Glenn settling into the groove of this song with his trademark bass playing. And Bowie always had a thing for bassists who could play more than a bit.

“Famous-in- Denmark-and-other-Territories-Ian”

  • thank you for continuously trying to make me look like a big fat liar :smiling_face_with_horns:

Of course Ian is famous in Denmark: it was here Purple MarkII started their amazing career!
And on his fb page there was this woman who claimed she had some fun (I do not know what she meant :innocent:) with him during a couple of nights in the 90s, so I guess he has left a few thorough impressions here and there…

But enough about that:
Thanks to all of you. I don’t remember who told me that Bowie and Ian had some kind of collaboration, but I guess the person was misinformed :expressionless_face:

MkI and MkIII :slightly_smiling_face: :upside_down_face:

Ian who?

Deep what?

Where is Denmark again?

You never lie, Karin, you just color reality to your liking, that is a whole different thing! :hugs:

Now now, no need to drag other Marks in

Well Uwe, I am famous for my colour coordination :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

All Karin did was pull the average between Mk I and Mk III. That is some deep gurl power math.

Talking about other singers, saw this the other day:

https://youtu.be/I0UdJt29cpA?is=RcvgDqMHtgQ-jsQ3

What a charming man he was!

But please anyone: enlighten me - what happened REALLY after the first really good Whitesnake band and then the hairmetal thingy.
Was it the record company who asked him politely while they twisted his arm behind his back, or was it his own wishes to escalate the band?

Coverdale comes from a working class background in a not so affluent Northern England region, his dad lost his job for years not finding new work, mom had to make do with operating a working men’s pub/club. Like at lot of people from such a background, there is no certainty ever that riches stumbled upon later in life will actually be there perpetually, it could all be gone again anytime.

Coverdale wanted international success badly and he wanted a one-way-ticket to America, land of his childhood dreams. In the early 80s, after divorce from his first Polish-German wife Julia and a potentially life-threatening illness of his then only daughter Jessica (since then a married-in part of German aristocracy, those expensive boarding schools were well-invested money), he separated from the old Purple management and half his band, reined in John Kalodner, an A&R Svengali specializing in reestablishing acts deemed past their prime, and signed with Geffen Records, a then up-and-coming new label with very ambitious plans.

He took a glance at Jon Bon Jovi and at Led Zep’s enduring popularity in the US of A and patterned his new look and style after them. And if you lived in LA in the mid 80s, changed your hair color, went to the gym, and tried to look ten years younger as well as make people forget that you once sang with an “old act” like DP, then another social climber like Tawny Kitaen who already professed in her high school yearbook that she would one day like to be the wife of a rock star or actor is the perfect fit. An American wife for an American life. And while the marriage with high-maintenance Tawny folded quickly, his third wife Cindy remained an American too. From Saltburn-by-the-Sea to Lake Tahoe, it all makes sense and little David had a master plan.

DC was no doubt supported in his quest to reconquer America on his own after his stint with DP, but he needed no real pushing, it was in him.

Alternative (and not-entirely-serious) take:

Madonna had massive success with “Like a virgin” and his material girl look.

It was decided Whitesnake had to look like that in order to be truly launched in the US and recoup the millions Geffen had already invested in them.

Problem is, applying the material girl look demanded more “male bimbo” types instead of outdated thingies like accomplished songwriters or soulful players, thus a new cast was produced.

Thankfully, they could apply this new look over the masterful material previously written and recorded by awesome musicians like Neil, John, Don and Aynsley.

However, when it came the time to re-play the winning move , Bimbosnake could only come up with the less-than-enthralling Slip of the Tongue, and well…that’s pretty much it.

Hope that helps

Best, J.-

Thank you Uwe
You are a human dictionary :folded_hands:t3:

Jon Bon Jovi? Really? Led Zep I get, being British and all.

Well his childhood dreams certainly was fulfilled

Daughter married into aristocracy is new to me

Bimbosnake - sitting in my sofa, drinking a very nice cup of coffee, and now spitting coffee all over the place, laughing out loud (a little coffee came out of my nose too )

Really? Madonna/Whitesnake?
Well if you say so :grin:

You know I’m the only guy here with whom you can follow your undeniably gossipy urges, Karin, even Beate only ever wants to talk about Steve’s string gauges! Or gets all defensive about questionable men’s apparel choices.

Uwe you know how to suck up to a girlie from Denmark
Tell me, are all Germans with a ‘von’ in their last name some kind of royalty?
Maybe you remember that we had this couple:
https://youtu.be/M2gvXL5aKhU?is=7JbnadjW843dTD5R
named ‘van Pallandt’ and I have always wondered if ‘van’ and ‘von’ automatically means royalty
Yes Sir, I do know ‘von’ means from, but nevertheless

And gossiping: thanks for the insight of the great David Coverdale

(Uwe feels mounting terror in him …)

Karin, you have a real talent getting me into trouble! Referring to the Van Pallandts as Germans, Rock Voorne will be in despair about this, they are Duh-Duh-Duh-Dutch! As Dutch as a dyke leaking water!

Frederik was even born in Copenhagen - as the son of the Dutch (nicht: deutsche) ambassador there, an aristocrat. Worse still, his wife Nina, also an aristocrat (you know how they don‘t mingle much with plain folk unless it’s rolling on the kitchen floor of one of their castles) was D-a-n-is-h, nein, keine Deutsche, eine DÄNIN so wie du!!!

https://youtu.be/9_rfqP9GMZc

Are all Germans with a von nobility? No, but the vast majority of them, yet there are some non-blue-blooded von-pockets too.

Can you now please give me your Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen‘s address so I can write her a worried letter to NEVER LET YOU NEAR A RESPONSIBLE POSITION IN THE Udenrigsministeriet? You spell diplomatic trouble, woman!

You mean Karin has nightly recurring occurrences where Ian Gillan appears like this to her

and gives her orders for the day?

That’s pretty likely indeed from what we see and hear.
