One of the most overrated bands…

Unpopular opinion time!

For the record, I think Greta Van Fleet are far better musicians than Led Zep were and do Led Zep better than Zep - at least their singer can sing consistently on pitch!

I cannot say the same thing for the Screech Monkey, Mr. Plant!

GVF put out consistently good records that have veered away from their idols recently, the same cannot be said of Led Zeppelin.

Off key singing and sloppy, inconsistent guitar work make the first three LZ records almost unlistenable for me, with the exception of a few tunes here and there.

LZ4 only has 4 good tunes on it, the rest are trash.

LZ2 is possibly the worst record I’ve ever heard in my life, and that guitar solo from Page in Heartbreaker is the kind of thing you’d get from a 15 year old kid at a highschool talent show where he absolutely thinks he’s the shit, but ends up playing a bunch of messy slop on stage.

Zeppelin finally made a great record with Houses of the Holy, when they finally released a record with actual original material, not outright theft, Page played well and consistently, and Plant sang consistently on key and on pitch.

Presence is also a great record, but two great records amongst a back catalogue that ranges from good to trash does not make a great band.

The Beatles aren’t overrated - they are competent, consistent, original and have written some of the greatest songs in pop history.

Led Zeppelin, by contrast, is a band with a phenomenal rhythm section with a guitar player and singer who couldn’t bother to apply themselves half the time, either in performance or writing - they’d just rather steal wholesale from Willie Dixon and others and only give credit after they got sued and lost.

JPJ and Bonham always deserved better than Page and Plant - Zeppelin was a waste of their talents, it could have been so much better with a competent, consistent and originally creative guitar player and singer who weren’t prone to theft.

At least when Ritchie or Jon stole, they gave credit where it was due, instead of claiming it as their own. I can respect that, but what Page and Plant did to Dixon and others I cannot.

The fact that GVF copied and stole from them is outright poetry and justice in my books - Robert and Jimmy finally got their just desserts, and I’ve absolutely no problem with that.

Forget the Beatles. Led Zeppelin is the most over rated band in the history of rock and roll in my books, and are mostly undeserving of the praise offered them, considering the laziness and thievery that abounded in that band.

I could go on, but I won’t. I’ll await my tarring and feathering now - I know how unpopular what I’ve said is, but whenever someone brings Zep up as rock gods, I just can’t keep my mouth shut.

Mike, I really don’t think it is frowned upon in here to trash other bands  unless it is Purple of course. And apparently also Beatles…
And I never tar and feather other people for their tastes, beliefs, haircuts or whatever they have going for them
Live and let live is my motto in life :folded_hands:t3:

Well, I like a lot of Led Zep songs
This happens to be my favourite:

Rob Plant’s voice is however nothing compared to this bloke:

He was in Germany the other day with fine singer:

But that’s a whole other story….

My Rock’n’Roll heart still beats hardest whenever I hear these guys:

LZ?! :money_mouth_face:

I agree with everything—it’s pretty much what I wrote in another thread, even if less in-depth.

What I always thought of Plant

Never heard of Dan Byrne before - nice voice - I find the song doesn’t really do anything for me, it’s far too conventional for my tastes.

At least you chose a couple Zep songs I like (Rock and Roll and Kashmir), as for the one I don’t, well, I will leave that for your consumption!

Regarding my tarring and feathering comment:

Before the Pandemic, I reviewed all the Zepplein studio records on FB. Most of you have seen my Purple reviews here and will know I’m honest in my opinions of things - when I love something, I love it and when I hate something, well, let’s just say you’ll certainly know if I do!

I utterly trashed LZ 1-4, and wrote less than favourable reviews for Physical Graffiti and Coda. People in the comments just couldn’t handle that I had the balls to shit on their sacred relic of a band, and I got reemed pretty hard for it in the comments. I’m used to it where my feelings regarding Zep are concerned, and so, I prepared myself for the worst here…

I love the records nobody really thinks of when it comes to Zep:

  1. Houses of the Holy (their absolute best)

2. Presence (a close second and has what I feel is really stunning guitar work from Page, which I rarely say about him)

3. In Through The Out Door (pretty good if atypical offering from Zep, which Is exactly why I like it)

Everything else to me is a very mixed bag and not really deserving of the praise it gets, except maybe Stairway to Heaven, which is utterly flawless from start to finish.

Glad to know I can make my feelings known here although…

…I’m also not too fond of Rainbow either, they don’t really do anything for me and I find them very hit or miss. Don’t tell Uwe!

That is one almighty turnaround Mike in about two hours, I have to admire your passion, from both angles. Excepting your praise of Bonzo, your first anti Zep rant was even more vehement than Uwe has ever unleashed from the bowels of hell. And then after a little while some glowing praise…interesting. Well not really, how many folk have I come across in my musical life that only admire certain songs and albums from some of the big name bands from the glory days, Zeppelin and Purple included. A rather interesting analysis though and at least Uwe doesn’t mind Physical Graffiti. However now we venture into the lowest of the low, as far as anyone that I have ever noticed in not liking LZ, to say that VGF are better or of a more higher quality composition wise, let alone as musicians, that is a beauty. They may be technically very good musicians, let’s see what ‘iconic’ music of VGF lasts into the echelons of popular music history. I will let that one slide for now. And mentioning Rainbow as another band NOT enjoyed will garner an additional response no doubt (again) from Uwe. The popcorn machine has just gone into meltdown. Now what are we going to do for entertainment? Cheers.

Bashing Robert Plant is not my thing, saw him with his Strange Sensations 2013 in the RAH, fine show, miles ahead of his Zep music

And for LZ: loved them as a youngster but yes indeed Page’s soloing was often stereotypical but nethertheless i like to play " No Quarter" on my keyboard

Dear MacGregor,

It’s not really a turnaround - both posts are true for me at the same time. Yes, I get a little bit too passionate when it comes to my dislike for Zep, but I really should say, it’s early Zep that I despise. The later stuff I either love or tolerate in good amounts.

GVF are still a young band on only their third record - I think if you give them some time, they might just surprise you! Their second record is way more than just tribute to Zep and shows some prog influences as well. There is more to them than meets the eye, and I like them very much.

I should clarify what I meant about them being a better band - I meant that as a whole, although I think GVF’s singer and guitarist, Josh and Jake, are way better musicians than page and plant. The rhythm section, I’ll grant, can’t hold a candle to JPJ and Bonzo, who could??, but they are still really, really good, and overall a much more proficient and consistent band than their idols, imo. I rest my case.

I actually agree with you Erik - I love Robert’s voice as it has lowered with age. It was the higher, off pitch stuff of his youth in the 70s I absolutely can’t stand. I really should have clarified that, and if I gave the impression I think Plant is horrible singer overall, that really is unfair to him, and not true of how I really feel. I do generally feel though that his output with Zep is hit or miss - and I wish he’d applied himself more, same with Page. My comments about wasted potential are accurate to how I feel about Zep - they could have been so much greater than they were.

To put it plainly: I feel Robert was an utterly awful singer in his youth, and didn’t deserve the praise he got. Around 1972/73 is when I feel he finally learned to begin how to sing well, and since, he has only improved. I’ve always loved his lower register, his higher register, however, can be either disastrous or beautiful depending on how accurate his pitch is on a given evening.

But yes, to be honest, his singing on the first three Zep records is atrocious to my ears - he does have his moments though. Stairway is one of them, so is the Rain Song, or No Quarter, all three of which have a hauntingly beautiful quality to his voice.

I really do prefer his later work with Alisson Krauss - it’s there I find he really shines. Apologies to Robert for my unfairness, I really should have been a bit more even handed, but the moment someone mentions Zep as one of the greats, my goat gets got, and off I go!

Mike, there is quite a lot of Led Zeppelin I don’t like, especially some of their very early music. Regarding the lead vocalists, does the GVF singer use auto tune and or pitch correction? There would be a fair chance he does but I could be wrong. Just wondering about the ‘off pitch’ comment regarding Robert Plant back in the day. Many of the singers back then were utterly genuine, what you hear is what you get. Overall there isn’t one artist that I am into that hasn’t released ordinary to bad songs over their careers, it is the way of things. As long as the grand music is dominating their catalogues and is wonderful, that is enough for me and many others too no doubt. We all have our favourites and even our favourites are not spared the wrath at times. Look at how poor Ritchie gets hung out to dry by one punter here, whose name I do not need to mention. Although he enjoys some of Ritchie’s music at times. No-one is spread the ‘guillotine’ at times by the aficionados and fans out there. Cheers.

that should be 'spared the guillotine".

Erik, I always smile when I read about different tastes in music and bands because taste is not possible to discuss nor agree on.
Purple are, maybe not surprising, my all time favourite band, but oh I love a lot of other bands: Whitesnake, Mr Big, Extreme, Thunder, Dan Byrne and others.
I do not expect other people like the same, and that’s ok.

However - talking about being overrated, in my nativity I thought that was a personal opinion too - I got corrected there

Never mind - I’ll drink a cup of my delicious coffee and wish all of you a very lovely day/evening wherever you are  muah :kissing_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You cause me to remember that each musician’s process is a journey and that no one is very good when they start out singing - I was awful, just as awful as Robert, when I started singing around age 25.

Perhaps I need to bare this in mind when I hear those screechy high notes that cause my skin to crawl, and smile and appreciate his journey holds much in common to my own. The same with Page, although to be honest I’m not sure Jimmy ever improved like Robert did - perhaps I’m not a fan of his playing style, it’s far too disjointed for me, that’s ok.

Perhaps I could be kinder to them both where the development of their instruments are concerned. On the theft, however, I have no respect for them, and I’ll stay firm on that.

Regarding Uwe and his views on Ritchie, I was not aware of this, and I’ve never witnessed him be terribly negative towards Ritchie in his comments. If anything, I always got the impression he liked Ritchie’s playing very much!

Can someone, or Uwe himself, care to fill me in? I’ve only been active in this community for the last few years, so I really don’t know what the deal is with Uwe or why people are so polarized towards him aside from his particular brand of humour. Forgive my ignorance in asking!

I am also not too fond of Rainbow either … Don’t tell Uwe!

Mike …

i-am-your-father-darth-vader
I also take note of a lengthy and very fruitful discussion dismembering LZ from limb to limb, children,

Alas!, my work is done here I think …

Uwe, mein Bruder, may I call you a little savage?
Why don’t you like Led Zep all of a sudden?

Not even Jimmy Page guitaring?
I admit Rob Plant is not much of a singer, compared to you-know-who, but the overall impression of the band is not worse than…………
Than……………… ms Swift

  • I like Led Zeppelin, great albums (first four especially), great songs, great production (Page, Glyn/Andy Johns, et al)
  • I loved (and bought it both vinyl and CD) the “Coverdale Page” album
  • I am now the guy in Uwe’s GIF  :fire: :fire_engine:

All of the sudden? Consistently not since 1975 my Dear! And whats wrong with being a savage? In Huxley’s Brave New World. “the Savage” was the only good protagonist!

Why not like Zep? They’re horribly pretentious. The adulation of their fans for them is quasi-religious, yuck. Nonsense lyrics. They don’t touch me emotionally, never did, hell, the Bay City Rollers do that more, they were at least a good time band (and unpretentious). Musically speaking: I don’t like le(a)den drums, all those English folk influences don’t do much for me and I dislike singers whose lyrics are so inaudibly sung I have issues hearing and consequently understanding them. Also don’t like that the delineation between a major and a minor chord is not always very clear with Zep, no doubt something they picked up from the Blues, in fact all musical boundaries in their music are murky and billowing, I think they did that on purpose, they didn’t want to be clear-cut.

As a 16-year-old I would have added: They are not even a heavy rock band, they just play by chance a few heavy numbers, but they are not committed to the cause.

But of course they are major band and have delivered some notable works. I like how Plant has matured (unlike Page, who will forever be caught in his 70s glory time bubble). JPJ is a versatile musician. Bonham had an immediately identifiable style, just not one I liked, but you can’t deny his immense and - unfortunately - lasting influence on especially American drummers. They are very gullible there. You have to be if you voted for a President like that.

Not sure whether this should be my call, solipsist I have been christened by the good Reverend Rubber.

I think it has to do with me being raised in a family of critical thinkers. Burning for something together with lots of other people without a critical eye on the chosen object of reverence makes me uncomfortable and is not a good omen - maybe something in my German DNA, we learn from mistakes …

There have always been people I rub totally the wrong way, in school, in bands, the wider family circle, in fora like this one. One of the name partners of my former German law firm once said to me “Herr Hornung, if we were a political party, you would have already been ousted several times over for not treading the party line, but stepping on it with your feet, be thankful we keep you here!” It was half in jest, Herr Weber appreciated me. Another law firm partner once said: “Uwe is an enfant terrible and constant hellraiser, but what people don’t see is that his loyalty to the overall organism (edit: meaning the law firm) is boundless.” I think Rolf was right with that. I never left the firm, even where I was offered more money elsewhere.

Finally, as a lefty I of course believe in the betterment of man and the world over time which means: The current status is never worth preserving. Conservatives think: As long as we don’t have definite proof that the future will be better, let’s rather hang on to the past. (And sometimes - not always - they’re even right with that.)

To sum it up: Unless you’re in a place of worship kneeling and having dimmed down your critical intellect, I don’t think anything is ever 100% right nor deserves to be.

Hey hey - you called me a savage for not liking Bowie’s ‘Let’s dance’.

And when you write this:
“The adulation of their fans for them is quasi-religious, yuck. Nonsense lyrics” - are you talking about Led Zep or Ms Swift?

Well, never let our different tastes in music devide us in here…
I am in an excellent mood. Have just juiced a lot of delicious veggies and an apple and an orange! I can almost feel all the happy vitamins jumping of joy in my stomach

Mike, i understand your thoughts bout young Robert’s voice, it wasn’t his vocal style that got me hooked to Zep in my teens, more some songs like Kashmir or Achilles Last Stand…speaking of singers outside Purple i was and still am fond of Paul Rodgers in his time with Free or Steve Marriot …

Regarding Plant i think he matured really well and choose a good path of going outside his known Arena of adrenaline fuelled stadion rock
