I kinda like covers that go “out of the left field”, not the ones that aim to recreate the original as close as possible. One of the favourites as featured on THS many years ago:
A hit in Germany in 1967 (that is where Ritchie heard it first as he was living with his young family in Germany back then) which explains why Purple’s second generation cover never made as much as a dent in the German Charts coming so soon after it.
Helloween very good, it was not easy to make Rat Bat Blue, but their mastery allows them to do it!

by the way, Hush by Purple has always been an iconic song for the Mods and neo-Mods movement.
The Purple’s versatility is incredible.

I’ve never owned a Venom album in my life, but as far as intensity goes, this is pretty stunning and does the original justice. And Cronos is a much better singer than many of the cooky monster vocalist that came after him. Yet these guys were once deemed so extreme, my how times change! Can’t agree with the “noise merchants” qualification (not that the original was in any way “unnoisy”, wasn’t that even the point?), frantic yes, but well-played. Frankly, I didn’t know Venom could be that good - maybe time to get one of their albums after all.
