Très cool, Mikey, and you really have eyesight? I thought only blind people can play slide like that!
Are you comparing me to Mr. Healey?
If so, Jeff didn’t play slide for the most part. He played with his fingers overtop the guitar like a pianist would, with incredibly low action.
My action is mile high by comparison and my slides from the chords and scales etc - totally different sounds!
Just because a guitar sits on the lap does not make it the same.
Sorry Uwe… people always compare me to him, I find the comparison understandable and yet very uninformed. It gets a bit exhausting having to keep hearing it and explaining to people that no, while I can see the compliment you’re trying to make, I am nothing like Jeff Healey.
I appreciate your kindness nonetheless and you did nothing wrong - my pet peeve is about me, after all!
Glad you liked the cover, it’s always been one of my favorite Purple tunes - Ian’s comment about it being about “morally upright Christian heterosexual buggery” and “not the other kind” has always made me smile and laugh.
Plus that Blackmore riff is killer and really fun to play - one advantage to my tuning is that the power chord based on inverted fourths that Jon and Ritchie made so much a part of the Purple sound is directly part of Open E tuning - the bottom three strings are tuned root, fifth and octave root on top, then the major third, then another fifth and root on the top two strings- which makes playing Blackmore style riffs super easy!
Playing Ritchie’s picking patterns on KAYBD or SOTW is dead easy this way, and also a very nice exercise in right hand picking technique - wish I could play with my fingers to get closer to Ritchie’s sound, but the muscles in my hand won’t permit it, so I had to come up with my own style for playing lap steel with a flat pick, which is highly unorthodox and rather challenging.
Anyway, I’ve gone on a bit long, but nonetheless, glad you and others have enjoyed my cover! I should do another one someday!
Perhaps “When a Blindman Cries” a la Randy California in Quebec?
That would be great ![]()
Actually, my first association was him here, is that an insult too? ![]()
Back in the segregated bad ole days you might have package-toured with him in the not so Grand Old South as “Mikey Al Bino Nogooda: White Whirlybird Blooze”. ![]()
No sir, that is a high compliment - Robert is the whole reason I play!
I saw the wonderful and dearly departed Jeff at the Key Club (formerly Gazzarri’s) in L.A. and Pat Rush handled all slide guitar playing.
It was/They were amazing…
I was in front of Jeff and so close to him that I could hear the natural sound of his pick against the strings over the venue’s amplification.
Good times ![]()
Phew, second time lucky!
I unfortunately did not get to meet or play with Jeff - but I am friends with some of his close friends. They all say they wish we could have met - I’m sure he’d be very amused by the comparison.
Pat Rush is a monster slide player who I’ve played with before, great guy, killer player. He knew my mentor who was big in the blues scene here in Toronto - there’s nothing but respect and admiration between us when we cross paths occasionally.
Der unvermmeidliche Axel Rudi Pell … - at every DP- or Ritchie-associated gig in his neck of the woods you would see him - if you bowed a little: he’s only five foot somethin’ - with his KK Downing/Michael Schenker bottle-blond hair and his long leather Gestapo style coat graciously waiting to be recognized. ![]()
Blackmore’s influence did wreak some havoc on unsuspecting German youth. ![]()
Naturalized Danes, even if originally from reindeer-populated regions farther north, do the best DP covers of all:
A røck believer already early on!
You’re the only person that loves me undilutedly - Karin is fickle you know - here, Julio! ![]()
What a hell of a cover that was!!! Never heard of Axel but he’s a great singer in the Dio vein!
Yes I read about your mentor in your Guitar World feature (I am very serviceable so I will “brag” that one for you
)
Cheers, J.-
Careful now, saying you’re very serviceable will get you in trouble in another community I’m a part of!
No, he actually draws singers from the Power Metal / Hard Rock / AOR / people-who-survived-Ritchie-and-Yngwie pool.
The singers there are Dougie (first) and Rob Rock (how original!!) second.

Thanks for the correction!
That’s like me not knowing who Randy Bachman is!
Axel is German Judas Priest-meets-Dio Glam Rock Royalty - schäm dich!
Axel is the bobbing pineapple to the right.
I prefer Randy though. It takes a bear of a man’s physique to sing “shalalala” like you mean it and not sound gay about it. ![]()
